Pitch Lake is the world’s largest natural reservoir of asphalt and is located at La Brea on Trinidad's southwestern coast, covering 100 acres (40 hectares) and has a depth of about 250 ft (80 m), with the asphalt reserves estimated to weigh more than six million tons. European explorers used the asphalt to caulk their ships, and it was first used for road surfacing in 1815. Today, tens of thousands of tons of the asphalt are used annually for industrial use. The lake is also a popular tourist attraction.

Trinidad Motmots, known for their colorful plumage and long tails, reside in the interior of lowland evergreen forests on Trinidad. Active in the early morning and the late afternoon, they feed on small prey such as insects and lizards as well as fruit.
