Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest freestanding volcano at 5,895 m (19,341 ft) high. The origin of its name may be a combination of the Swahili word kilima, meaning “mountain,” and the KiChagga word njaro, loosely translated as “whiteness,” giving it the name “White Mountain.” A popular spot for tourists, Mount Kilimanjaro became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and was named one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa in 2013.
The Serengeti National Park in Tanzania has the largest population of lions in Africa due to the protection afforded them and other endangered animal species. Lions are listed as "vulnerable” on the Endangered Species List, due to loss of prey, habitat loss, and conflict with humans. A UNESCO site since 1981, the Serengeti Park is extremely popular with tourists seeking guided safari tours.

The wildebeest, also called the gnu, is an antelope native to Eastern and Southern Africa. In East Africa, the blue wildebeest is the most abundant big-game species. Wildebeest often graze in mixed herds with zebra, which gives them heightened awareness of potential predators. Wildebeest are a tourist attraction but compete with domesticated livestock for pasture.
In search of greener pastures, wildebeest annually travel an 800-km loop between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Masai Mara Park in Kenya. The trek is the largest mammal migration on Earth.
A view of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous state that united with Tanganyika in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. This archipelago in the Indian Ocean consists of many small islands with the two largest being Zanzibar and Pemba Island. The Zanzibar archipelago is often referred to as the “Spice Islands” for its production of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. The historic center is Stone Town, the world’s oldest functioning Swahili city and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000.
