Pictured is an aerial view of Saint-Pierre, the capital of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon islands, which are located in the North Atlantic Ocean south of Newfoundland, Canada. These islands, along with five smaller ones, have been a self-governing overseas collectivity of France since 2003. The French first settled Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in the 17th century, and the islands are the last vestige of France’s once vast North American possessions. Most of the population of approximately 5,200 is found on Saint-Pierre, with a small settlement on the north end of Miquelon.
