Lemurs, like the black-and-white ruffed lemur pictured here, are native only to Madagascar. The name lemur, derived from the Latin ‘lemures,’ means ‘specters’ or ‘ghosts.’ In Malagasy culture, lemurs are believed to have souls capable of getting revenge if wronged.
