The Rock of Gibraltar is a monolithic limestone promontory (a raised mass of land that projects into a lowland or a body of water) 426 m (1,398 ft ) high located in Gibraltar. The Rock is one of the two pillars flanking the Strait of Gibraltar, the other being located in Northern Africa. The Rock of Gibraltar’s upper area is a nature reserve and home to around 300 Barbary macaques, Europe’s only wild monkey population.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, Gorham's Cave Complex is comprised of steep limestone cliffs on the eastern side of the Rock of Gibraltar. The complex is Gibraltar's only World Heritage site. Within these cliffs are four caves, (Vanguard, Hyaena Cave, Bennett and Gorham) considered to be one of the last known habitations of the Neanderthals in Europe. The caves show Neanderthals hunted for birds and fish for food, used bird feathers for decoration, and did abstract rock engravings, all presenting new evidence of Neanderthal cognitive abilities. The complex is named after Captain A. Gorham of the 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, who discovered it in 1907.
