Photos of Libya

Leptis Magna, about 100 km (60 mi) east of Tripoli, is recognized as one of the most complete and best-preserved Roman ruins in the Mediterranean area. Founded as a Phoenician settlement in the second half of the 7th century B.C., Leptis was gradually absorbed into the Roman Empire and achieved its greatest prominence in the late 2nd-early-3rd centuries A.D., as the hometown of Emperor Septimius Severus. Septimius lavished honors on the city, including the creation of a magnificent new forum and the rebuilding of the docks, and made Leptis Magna the third-most important city in Africa, rivaling Carthage and Alexandria. The photo shows the remains of the Leptis market building (macellum). Leptis Magna became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.
