The Alps march across this image of Autumnal (early October) southern Europe. On either side of and above the Alps are the countries of (from left to right) France, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Slovenia, while below the Alps is Italy. The Mediterranean and Ligurian Seas sit to the west of Italy, while to the right is the Adriatic Sea. As the season progresses, snow begins to whiten the Alps. Image courtesy of NASA.
Predjama Castle, built in the mouth of a cave complex set halfway up a 123 m (400 ft) vertical cliff face at the end of a valley in southwest Slovenia, is known as one of the most-extraordinary castles in the world. The first castle, constructed in 1274 in the Gothic style, was destroyed in a siege and later rebuilt, only to be destroyed again in an earthquake in 1511. In 1570, the current castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, pressed next to a vertical cliff under the original medieval fortification. The castle has remained in this form, virtually unchanged, to the present day.
