Volcanoes National Park is home to the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Located in northern Rwanda, it is part of the great Virunga volcano conservation region spanning the Congo and Uganda. Three volcanoes are located within its borders, Mount Karisimbi, Mikeno, and Karisimbi (in the background of the picture). Besides the gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to golden monkeys, a variety of birds, reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The park is also where Dian Fossey, American conservationist, is buried near her cabin. Fossey spearheaded the conservation campaign for mountain gorillas until her murder in 1985. She is buried next to the grave of her favorite gorilla, Digit.

The Kandt House Museum of Natural History in Kigali is the oldest European building in Rwanda as well as the oldest building in Rwanda. The museum is dedicated to Dr. Richard Kandt, a German physician and explorer, who between 1897 and 1904, explored much of German East Africa and in 1898 discovered one of the sources of the Nile. In 1907, he was appointed Resident of Rwanda, and the following year he established Kigali as the administrative capital of Rwanda. The museum presents exhibits on the evolution of animals and plants, as well as on the interdependency between living beings and their environment.
A view of fishing boats on Lake Burera, a twin lake with Lake Ruhondo, both of which are located in Rwanda’s northern region near Volcanoes National Park. The two lakes were created by volcanic activity from Mount Muhabura, whose lava blocked the flow of the Nyabarongo River, forming twin lakes separated by a 1-km-wide strip of land. The island of Cyuza appears on the background.
Rwanda is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills" and this view of of Janja, a remote farming village in Northern Rwanda, exemplifies that title.
