CIA Labs is a federal laboratory and CIA’s in-house research and development arm. CIA Labs builds partnerships and sponsors consortium research projects with universities, labs, and even companies doing research in emerging technology verticals including AI, biotechnology, quantum computing, and others.

Digital Futures' mission is to identify, investigate, and evaluate technology from industry in order to bring timely and innovative solutions to mission. Partnering mission and industry to harness the technological expertise and innovations of the private sector to modernize, advance, and transform digital capabilities at CIA.

In-Q-Tel (IQT) is a global, not-for-profit strategic investor that identifies, evaluates, and leverages emerging commercial technologies that contribute to national security. CIA partners with IQT to find and assess startup companies that meet the Agency’s specific strategic technology needs in various areas, including AI, cyber, power and energy, autonomous systems, communications, biotechnology, space, and more. IQT focuses on technologies in all stages of development, providing the Intelligence Community (IC) with access to innovative technologies that have the utility and potential to support the needs of the IC.

DARPA makes investments in breakthrough technologies for national security by engaging the best minds and ideas across specialties, communities, and perspectives to solve the greatest national security challenges on the horizon. By design, DARPA reaches for transformational change instead of incremental advances by working within an innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate and governmental partners. DARPA works closely with military and other federal government entities within the science and technology ecosystem, including national laboratories, federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs), military Service research organizations and laboratories.

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) brings innovation missions together by accelerating the adoption of leading commercial technology throughout the military and growing the national security innovation base. DIU is the only DoD organization focused exclusively on fielding and scaling commercial technology across the U.S. military at commercial speeds. DIU seeks to provide examples of how government, businesses, and academia can work together more effectively to maintain the nation’s competitiveness today and lay the foundation for future advances. DIU engages directly within the venture capital and commercial technology innovation ecosystem across six critical technology sectors. DIU's streamlined process delivers prototypes to DoD partners, along with scalable revenue opportunities for commercial vendors, within 12 to 24 months.
