CIA STEAM advances education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) for students from kindergarten through graduate school, working with educators, academic institutions, and professional organizations across the country to ensure that the United States stays on the cutting edge of innovation. Since its inception in 2021, CIA STEAM and Agency officers have reached and impacted thousands of students.

Who We Are

In 2021, Congress granted the CIA authorities to improve education in STEAM through Section 501 of the 2021 Intelligence Authorization Act, thus establishing CIA STEAM. The program's mission is to inspire students to pursue STEAM fields by providing them with opportunities to learn and grow their technical skills. In order to stay on pace with or surpass our adversaries, the US needs to accelerate the future of innovation and by extension its strategic advantage. By strengthening STEAM education for students across America, CIA is helping to prepare the future workforce to solve tomorrow's challenges and to keep our country at the forefront of innovation.

What We Do

CIA STEAM provides resources to communities with limited exposure to STEAM programs, sponsors technology camps and championships, and provides funding to academic institutions to facilitate research and development. CIA STEAM also provides direct support to educators and students through its mentorship opportunities and virtual lectures, which allow students to learn more about the Agency from CIA officers. Our authorities include:

  • Entering into agreements that encourage and enhance study in STEAM disciplines
  • Funding research and technology initiatives
  • Providing cash rewards
  • Supporting national competition judging

Through our incredible partnerships, not only does CIA STEAM advance STEAM skillsets to ensure the future of US national security—the program also gives Agency officers the opportunity to give back to the community and country through mentoring and coaching, embodying the Agency's commitment to making a world of difference and driving success through service to the United States.
