The Origins of Battlefield Photography as Military Intelligence

Many readers are familiar with the graphic images of US Civil War casualties. Less understood is that the Civil War photos were preceded by images from the imperial wars before 1860, which coincided with the development and growth of photography around the world. One result was the US effort to use photographs of Crimean War (1853–56) battlefields as sources of military intelligence.
