TEXTt Sintered iron rods and blacks from ton mixtures, differing
as regards grain size of the initial powder and the carbon and
copper contents, were the subject of the experiments. In extensive
tests it wns foxind that the hardness values varied greatly if
measured according to the Vickers method but varied less if
measured according to the Brinell method. It was agreed with the
manufacturers.Kovohuty Mokracr.that the hardness will be measured by
the Brinell method, using a 2.5 mm, ball with a load of 62.5 kg for
30 sec. Tensile tests carried out on 12 x 12 x 86 mm specimens
with ends rounded off (r = 6 mm) yielded favourable results. Brat-
ing with copper was unsuccessful but later experiments showed that
brazing with copper is possible provided the sintered iron is
saturated with copper. This is done by spraying copper powder on
the specimens and passing them through a brazing furnace. If a

sufficient quantity of copper powder is used, the copper penetrates
throughout the cross-section and this has a favourable effect. If
the copper powder is added during the pressing, a material suitable
for heat treatment is obtained. Very favourable results were
obtained in producing components of complicated shape by welding
solid pieces of steel to parts produced by powder metallurgy methods.
It was found that sintered parts have as good welding properties as
solid steel. This technique is used particularly for producing
small parts of complicated shape. Laboratory fatigue tests using
a pulsator with a 7000 kg load gave favourable results for nuts
produced by powder metallurgy methods from the same material as
tractor bolts. The bolts fractured before the nuts showed any
appreciable sign of damage; the last thread of the nut tore away
when tbe bolt fractured. Wear tests both by a Skoda-Savln instru-
ment and in practical tests in pumps for durations of up to 5000 hours
showed that the sintered part had a very high wear resistance.
Carburizatlon tests showed that carburizatlon has a very favourable
effect for certain mi4tures but this will have to be supplemented by

quenching in water or in oil. Quenching of sintered steel
presslings brought about an increase in hardness but did not
result in an increase in tensile strength. This result was
obtained on specimens made from a sintered block and it is quite
possible that parts produced directly by pressing will have more
favourable properties. Corrosion tests were less favourable.
The usual conservation with grease does not provide adequate
protection. Nickel plating improves the anticorrosion properties
but not sufficiently. Cadmium coating produced somewhat better
results. Long duration tests with various anticorrosion
treatments are continuing. There are 20 figures, 2 tables and
11 references: 8 Soviet-bloc and 3 non-Soviet-bloc.

The authors examined 50 water rats, 75 musk rats, 118 shrews and 24 water
shrews. Significant antibody levels against L. grippotyphosa were present in 6
water rats and musk rats. 8 shrews and 2 water shrews. In all of these 4 animal
species, leptospirae could be visualized In the kidneys by silver Impregnation.
These belong to the 18 animal species well known to be carriers of leplospira In
Czechoslovakia. Their significance for the maintenance and transmission of lepto-
spirosis is discussed. Contrary to findings in Slovakia, leptospirae of the grippo-
typhosa group were present in shrews. Finally, the authors refer to positive sero-
logic reactions found in other wild animals (moles, hedgehogs, weasels, polecats,
foxes, roes and hares).

Abstract: Use of bariumtitanate, lithium7ulfate, and quartz crys-
tals in medical ultrasonic devices is described. A-scanning and
B- scanning are discussed. Intracranial parts whore ultrasonic
diagnostic methods can be used are described and the reliability
of the results ubtained by this method is evaluated. Best method
for the diagnosis of tumors is discussed. Use of ultrasonic de-
vices for the location of very small objects is described. 2 Fig-

Orig Pub : Pracovni lekar., 1957., 9; No 31 224 - 225.
Abstract : It was noticed in the spring of 1956 that workers having
contact with rubber solution in toluene (I) suffered from skin
irritation on their faces and inflation and reddening of eye-
lids. It was proved with eyperiments on animals that the
cause thereof was carbazole and, partly, anthracene con-
tained in I as impurities.

TEYT:. A method of'cleaning and activating the surface of parts prior to
nit.riding is patented, which improves the nitriding process and the quality of the
layer obtained on chrome-nickel austenitic (or any other alloyed) steel. The meth-
od consists of applying to the steel surface to be nitrided a thin hydride layer
of any metal (titanium, zirconium, tungsten, chromium, etc.) or a mixture of metal
hydrides and ammonium chlorate or carbonate in the form of a suspension in metha-
nol. In heating the surface during the nitriding process, it is cleaned from ox-
ides, activated and the process of atomic nitrogen saturation is facilitated and
accelera-Ced. Nitriding is taking place as usual by heating the part in an atmos-
phere containing atomic nitrogen. After 10 hours nitriding (including the prepara-

TEXT: It was established that a single coating of'
concentrated organo-stannic stabillsers (OOC) on the-skin, causes
an inflammation process after a latent period. This passes into
necrosis of the epidermis. Elution in an aqueou-s medium of some
types of finished polyvinylchloride film (PVC), stabilised with
(OOC), gives substances irritating the mucous membranes. In the
presence of mercaptans in (000, eluates of the finished film
attack more aggressively living tissues, despite the possibility
of decreasing their toxicity by oral introduct 'ion. The
stabilisers are more readily extractable from PVC films in

The H37Rv strain was extracted with petrol-ether, the extract vacuum distilled,
and then the 'cord factor' was precipitated from the ether solution by the use of
ethanol. No significant difference was registered when autopsies of two groups of
guinea-pigs, one infected with the extracted mycobacteria and the other with the
original H37Rv strain, were performed. Further experiments -failed to confirm any

aggravation of experimental mice tb as a result of the 'cord factor' action. The
authors do not agree with Bloch's conception of 'cord factor' as the source of
virulencir.. of mycobacteria. Urbant!rk - Brno (IV, 15)

ABSTRACT: Thiopental sodium is suitable for general anesthesia even after x-ray expo

ethylene inhalation anesthesia lasting 60-75 minutes does not aggravate irradiation
sickness; it should be given as lightly as possible. Thiopental sodium-alcohol infu-
sion anesthesia is contrainclicated in irradiation sickness. Experiments were conduc-

"Determination of Rancidity of Cod-Liver Oil."
Prague, Ceskoslovenska Farmacie, Vol 15, No 5, Jun 66, pp 232-214
Abstract fXuthors I ain-lish summary modified The first stage
&~ _7:
of rancidity of cod-liver oil caused by the first stage of oxid-
ation can best be determined using benzidine and thiobarbituric
acid; at more advanced stages chromatographic determination of
the oxidized substances is best. The peroxide and acid nurriber are
only complementary indicators. Stability of the oil is increased
by storage in a cool place. Oxygen should be prevented from cont-
act with the oil. 2 Figures, 2 Tables, 4 Western, 7 Czech, 1
