Text: A patent has been granted for a thermoelement in which the thermocouples, consisting of a semi-
conducting bead or a small ball with an approximate diameter of I mm,and leads connected to the ball both
mechanically and electrically, are designed for fast temperature measurements. However,.when measuring
surface temperatures the heat input to the thermocouple is low in intensity thus retarding the measuring
operation. To overcome these deficiencies a new method of installation of the thermocouple has been sug-
gested. The semiconducting ball is enclosed in a sleeve made of a conducting metal. The sleeve bottom consists
of a lamella made of the same metal, and having a diameter slightly greater than the sleeve diameter. this
lamella is intended to ensure a good contact between the thermocouple and the measured object. The ball
is soldered to the sleeve bottom by a proper soldering alloy, e.g. Sn-Pb, and is furthermore bonded by a plastic
adhesive to which metallic powder has been added for better heat conduction. Whereas a conventional ball
0.5 mm in millimeter, has a time constant of about 4 sec, the ball with a diameter twice that of the con-
ventional type, but mounted in the above sleeve, has a time constant of only 1.2 to 1.5 sec.

Whereas in biotin avitaminosis the synthesis of amylase in pancreas slices and of
alhu"n in chick liver slices is discontinued. the increa,_;e in activity of the tryp-
tophan peroxidase system (TPS) in rat liver, as induced by tryptophan is not dis-
turbed in vivo and only slightly disturbed in surviving liver slices by biotin defi-
ciency. The evidence thus obtained suggests that the a6aptive increase in TPS in
the liver of mammals is not associated with a de novo synthesis of the protein.

ABSTRACT: The authors investigated two-coil "RMU" relays
(relay adjustment sheet RS4.523.360, nominal voltage

,7 volts, coil resistance 220 and 280 ohms), re-
ceiving pulses from an alternating current grid through
a circuit forming a series of semi-sinusoidal pulses
CEL11ed diode pulses (Figure 2). The results ob-
tained are also valid for other fast operating re-
lays. Blocking by separate windings, as well as
blocking by one winding (Figure 7) are discussed,
and the resDective oscillograms of the current
and voltage are illustrated (Figures 5,6). One
Card 1/3 disadvantage of the diode DUlser is that only pulseso

The Operation of Relays Actuated by a Diode Pulser
of a fixed duration (10 milliseconds); can be gen-
erated; therefore, such circuits must have an ad-
ditional pulse-multiplying circuit. The first
ever method of multiplying cadence pulses was
developed and applied at the Leningrad Electrical
E'ngineering Communication Institute imeni Boch-
Bruyevich, where the relay computer "Sintez" was
built and is now used in accordance with this me-
thod. It is concluded -that diode pulsers have
great advantages over square-pulse pulsers because
the overvoltages are many times lower and the
operational conditions of the relays and diodes
are improved. For full utilization of relays in
complex circuits, the peculiarities of relays fed
through a diode pulser must be duly considered.
The a.c. voltage must be selected in accordance with
the rules mentioned in the article.The voltage in
blocking circuits of relays working with hot
windings must be lower than in control circuits. OLI

Aeranol immunization with duat plaGue vaccine,using the above-mantionod done,

persons, is very simple and allows the population to be mass-imnunized

TEXT; A 1.8-kw quartz-machining ultrasonic machine tool with a working
frequency of 20 kc has been developed by the Kafedra tekhnologii metallov i el-
-radiomaterialov Ryazanskogo radiotekhnich. in-ta (Department of Metal and Radio-
electric Material Technology at the Ryazan Radio Engineering Institute) in colla-
boration with other organizations. The tool is intended for cutting plates and
circular resonators from quartz, but it can also be used for making grooves and
complex openings, and for cutting other brittle materials of poor workability.
An amplifier in the frequency range of 15 - 20 kc ensures a power output of 500 -
1,800 w; the master bscillator works on an RC circuit. The electroacoustic
transducer consists of a magnetostriction oscillator and a concentrator with the

respective tool. A four-hinge mechanism and motor are provided for imparting to
the head an additional pendulum movement along the cutting line (when Cutting in
sections). The tool employed in,this case is a blade, but a tubular tool is used
for cutting circular resonators. !A boron carbide suspension is fed to the cut-
ting zone by a pump. The effect-,of the following factors on ultrasonic'eutting
is considered: 1) different abrasives; 2) grain size of the abrasive; 3) nate-
rial used-for the tool and its wear and tear rate; 4) tool thickness; and 5)
change in cutting speed as a function of the penetration depth of the tool Into
the quartz. In the ultrasohic cutting of quartz resonators the labor input of
current techniques is reduced to less than one-tenth.
