first group contains events which occur practioally simultaneously
with the onset of a flare or a radio buret. Iffects belonging to
this group are due to the abort wavelength iong.stivg radiation
originating on the sun. An example of this typ* of phenomenon
is the sudden increase In the radiowave obsorptiost in the ionosphere
due to ionization by solar UV radiation associatoof with solar
flares. The second group includes phenomena vh,ch are delaved
rolative to the onset of flares and radio buv*ta ind are associated

TMM s The possibility of production of paraxylole (uhich can b4
oxidized to terophthalic acid) from technical xylolo was
investigated. The problem can be divided Into two prArtst
1) separation of the individual isomers and 2) imomtrization of
motha- and ortho-xylol*s into paraxylolo. Labormtory experiments
on freezing 0out the p-isomer were tested at temporAtitros of -23,
-40 and -50 C and retention times of 15, 30, 45 asW (-0 mxnutes.
It was found that in the absence of o--xylolet the goelaratiLon of
p-xylole takes place satisfattorily at -504Cl namely the yield of
p-isomer reaches 18% with its residual concentration ka w-xylole
(filtrate) of 1.6 to 6.8%. Thus the method tan bit ustd for th~*
preliminary separation of xyloles, providing the filtrats is
submitted to a further separation for which the adsorption method.

It was found that a mixture rich in p-isomor passes through the
adsorbent practically unchanged but if the contoat of p-isomer
does not exceed 15% the separation does take place. On passing a
Wxture through the adsorption column,at first rs-iscKner is obtained
followed by a mixture rich in p-isomer and then agai.i a-isomor
(Table 2). Thus, after preliminary separation of p.-icylole by
freezing, the filtrate can be passed through an adsorption column
and a practically pure m-xylole and a frAction rich a p-tylole tan
be obtained. The former can be passed for the imom(ritation
treatment whilet the latter tan be again submitted tc the freezing
treatment. The isomerization of pure o- and a-xyloles was tested
using an apparatus previously described Otef,2) and an
aluminosilicate bead ca!alyst. The optimum conditions were found
to bet temperature 450 C and feed rate 0.6 hr-1. The Influence
of addition of gaseous hydrocarbons (propane - butane fra~;tion) to
the reaction mixture was also tested. The experimental results
are given in Table 3. It was found that the additlox *:r gaseous
hydrocarbons has a positive effect on the yield of p--tylolo on

isomerization of o-xylole. Thus, the IsomerizatAon treatment of
the above two isomers should be carried out separate.1y. on the
basis of experimental results, a scheme for the woparation and.
treatment of xyloles is proposed (a** figure). Thit consists *to
preliminary rectification of technical xylole and lacmerization
products from isomerization plants of o- and m-xytoles for the
separation of lighter and heavier hydroc*rbousi fine ractificetion,
for the purpose of separation of o-syloles from the mixture of p-
and m-xyloles. The former is then passed for the is:imerization
treatment and the latter mixture to passed for the frt*ong
treatment etc., as described in the experimental part of the work*

tion point and viscosity aorresponding to the norms for
