PURPOSE: This monograph is intended for physicists and engineers
working with fluctuation noise and interference problems. It
may also be used as a textbook by students and aspirants studying
statistical radio physics, information theory, and random processes
in radio devices.
COVERAGE: The monograph contains an exposition of statistical theory
of optimal receivers which not only detect signals having variods
characteristics against a background of random noise, but also
measure the parameters of such signals. The theox"y of linear

ones, is presented in the introduction. Major attention is paid
to radar problems. The book also describes some new experiments
carried out by the authors. Parts I and III and Ch. VII of Part
II were written by L.A. Vaynshteyn. V.D. Zubakov wrote the rest
of Part II except Ch,. VIIIO which was written Jointly by

TITLE: The smelting of rimming steel in 80-ton electric furnaces wJ.-,,h con-

f
PERIODICAL: Stal , no. 5, 1962, 42o - 425
TEXT; The industrial -scale electric smelting of rimming ateel is carried
out in furnaces with a rated capacity of 80 tons and an aatual ~,,apacity of 90 -
- 95 tons, (transformer capacity: 25,000 W, eloctrode-dian-eter: 555 Ira, deP"
of ti-4 bath: 1000 mm) . Tests have shown that one oil' the most important condi-
tions of this process is the oxidation of the ra.,tal before tapping which determims
its uniform rimming in the ingot mold, The oxygen quantity involved in the proc-
ess depends mainly on the carbon content of the metal and the ferric oxide content,--
of the slag. This, in turn, is conditioned by the quantity of ore added to the
charge and the basicity of the slag. For &lags with a basicity of 3.0 - 5.0 a-,Id
~t metal temperatures of 1635 - 16450C, the average value OIL' V"Ototal was 24.1%;

Desvifuration of the metal takes place most intensively (before slag tapping) at

poijrin8 is limited by the shortness of the secondary cooling 6.-ctor (6.5m),*where
the metal solidifies. The rimming of the steel In the mold, in' case of medium-
-carbon grades, can be promoted by adding aluminum, in th~ cast) of meditun-carbon
grades by blowing oxygen into the metal stream after the Itntez-zAttont; ladb",. T-he
macrostructure of continuously poured, eleetro-smelted steels w-as studied with

oxy,,-en will intansify rimming and a normal skin, 10 - 25 mn, thick, will be ab-~grad.
Other defects often encountered In this kind of ingots are blisters in tho skin,
0.5 - 3.0 r,-jn in diameter, at a depth of I - 5 mm below the surfice, and also beads
and lateral and longitudinal cracks. Lateral cracks can ba pili, eented by 1"lot-'ely
controlling the metal oxidation and improving the inold-coating. Tongitudinal
cracks are less frequent, mainly owing to the delayed zbrinkage of the -,hinned
sectors of the solidifying skin in the mold. Rimming s-.eel ln,4~ots are hat-rolled
on the 1200-mi mill-, with universal roughing, two-high sitand and revevsing-fin-
ishing four-high stand, with coils heated in the nirnace. To promote the sinter-
ing of gas-blisters, the reductione are increased (170 x .104G r= sj'-ab3 are re-
duced with 9 passes instead of 11, 150 x 620 mm slabs wlth f5 pasixis instead of 7).
