TEXT: In their work on semicanductivity. Yooser and 'Pearson start from
the covalence of binding in semiconductors. They uso that condition from,
Pauli's theory of metallic and covalent binding, whioh gives no metallic
conductivity. To obtain the law ol' filled octets in ap3 orbits of atoms of
elementary substances, or of anions and the totRlity,of valance eleelrons,
as well as the binding of anions with one another, thi? condition of absence
of empty orbits was used instead of the condition of fiaturation of binding
in semiconductors. This law leads to the relation (ne/n a )+t-=8, where n e
is the total number of (unpaired) valence electrons, including also the
nonseparated pairs on anions; n a is the number of anions; and b is the
number of bindings formed by the anions among thems4ves, Instead of this
Mooser and Pearson take n Q as the total number of valenc4o Plectrons, via

incompatible with the concept of semiconductivity of the compounds formed
by the elements of groups IV-VII with one another, and does not lead in
this case to the octet rule, e.g~j for compounds of tho typo AVB71

ABSTRACT., Subsequently to a preceding paper (Ref 1) in which the

results show that in'contraot to (I) the abnormal rise of -the

ABSTRACT: The unusual sensitivity of crital phenomena irith respoct to
minimum admixtures has already several times been mentioned
(Refs 4-8). Tbe effect of minimum adnixtureo of i3oamyl a.1-
cohol (1), sodium mulfate and nonyl alcohol upon critical
phenomena was investigated; thus it ifse pozulble to dateruine
the variation of the temperature function or viscosity in
the system triethylamirle - water. Tho additions were selected
under consideration of the investigations of reforence 9.~In
the present case the experimental resultz~ oT the admixtures
of (I) are given. Different amounts of (I) were otepitise idded
to the mixture to be investi-ated, Tho oxpe:rimantal results
show (Table 1) that admixtures of (I) roduen; the temperati~re

The strongest effect of (1) was observed in juixtures being
clooe to the critical concentrations (8-53 and 857% by mole
of triethylamine). In the case of mixtuves with a compoaition
below the critical concentrations an effect of the admixtures
of (I) was observed, contrary to that obiaerved in cormeotion
with concentrations above the critical cancontrationo On the
basis of a diagram (Fig 1) of the function 11ri? - I/T the
effect of the admixturea of (1) upon differenf sections of

ABSTRACT: The maximum contrast between land and sea t~-mperatures Arm

layer temperatures: I . where index I is referred to as

the land characteristics, x is time, p is density, c- is specific heat, 2 is the
propagation depth of temperature fluctuation, R is the value of the radiative
balance of the underlying surface, P is the turbulent influx of heat, and LE is the
heat consumption in evaporation. The physical meaning of this equalion permits
an assumption that the value of temperature amplitude represents tile character-
istic of breeze-development conditions (the maximum difference between land
and sea temperatures is equal to the maximum excess of soil temperature over
its mean values, i. e. , it is equal to the amplitude). The existing correlation
draphs of these characteristics confirm this. Besides, Armax is proportionate
to total radiation S- . To account for the wind effect due to other causes, the
authors deem it advisable to introduce the dimensionless characteristic S,
which reflects the effect of both factors, where U to -the total transfer. This
characteristic calculated on the basis of averaged data over several years agrees
-well with the average frequency of breezes. L. Volokitina. (Tranalationof
