This committee of the House recently did yeoman service for
the U. S. labor movement and all of us by opening up again the
case of the dangerously effective communist operation in the
United Packinghouse Workers' Union centering in Chicago. Tony
Stephens, for twenty-two years a leading officer of the union,
quickly found himself friendless and office-less when he again

tried to raise the question from within a year ago. He asked our Council's
trade union section for legal and research aid in preparation of his case for
submission to AFL-CIO, which was freely given. But only the publicity and
subpoena power of thecommittee seemed effective in making a public record,
which enabled AFL-CIO Executive Council last week to order an official
investigation by its own subcommittee.
Our very good and effective English union friends, the Industrial Research
and Information Service, Ltd. (IRIS) of 404 Maritime House, Clapham,
London S. W. L, can take even more credit for fact that the British Amal-
gamated Engineering Union, the equivalent of our Machinists, Steel and Auto
Workers' unions all rolled into one, which seemed only two years ago to
balance on edge of falling into communist control, has now firmly re-elected
Bill Carron as President, cutting the vote of his communist opponent nearly
in half and carrying with him a strong, intelligent, anti-communist board
for next five years.
As in the United States where the communist wedge into electronics field in
form of United Electrical Workers ?(U.E.) has experienced a resurgence as
result of abandonment of case of Subversive Activities Control Boarcl a ainst
it, the ten years communist-dominated English Electrical Trades Union (E.T.U.)
has almost crushed the revolt raised by Les Cannon and three associates at
time of Hungarian events, but although complicated by practice, like some
considerable number of other unions in Europe, of electing chief officers for
life or good behavior, the battle goes on led by those who broke away from
communist ranks after Khrushchev's blood bath in Budapest.
If you don't have it (and we get all too few of English published titles on
subject here in U.S.), you would be well advised to spend 20 shillings in
ordering it from IRIS in London, Harry Wetton's "Third World War" or Trade
and Industry the New Battleground. This is the British equivalent of the
0 verstreet's book on "What We Should Know About Communism," with the emphasis
on the new trade and industry angle we would expect.
Vienna Youth Festival of communists this year by labor sympathizers.
Fred Bowen from Australia writes us that all communist candidates were
'"soundly defeated" in both Federal and State elections held recently, in
spite of their new pitch of respectability and altered tactics. Premier
Cahill and his Labor Administration,which have held New South Wales for last
21 years, never has let his organization be tagged with any communist sympa-
thies which have so discredited the Federal Labor Party leader, Dr. Evatt.
Fred and his associates, who carry the physical body scars to this day from
the clash with communist elements on waterfront, chuckles over the latest
switch of Dr. Evatt to openly denouncing communists by name and alignment
with religious elements he once denounced instead. As in Britain, labor has
circulars out denouncing and warning against any participation in the so-called

The Upholsterers' Union, which does pay my salary, now has a convention in
San Francisco and now asks some of my time for their affairs in early weeks
of June there, so Freedom Academy hearings, etc., had better go direct to
Alan G. Grant, Jr., 806 Metcalf Building, Orlando, Florida, for this month.
One of reserve officers refresher session this summer has asked us to rerun
