Do you know of any friction existing; between American and Portuguese
geologists in Angola?

2. A. Yes, there is, but it applies only to junior geologists of both countries.
There is a very harmonious and cooperative relationship bxisting between
the senior geologists, of which there are only eight or ten. However, the
situation is not serious and only creates a little hard feelings between the
two groups, and I don't know of anything that can be done to correct the
situation.
Mineral explorations now going on in Angola are being done by the Portuguese
government, with financial aid from the Marshall Plan. There are about
50 geologists in all working on these projects', 15 of whom are Portuguese.
The remainder are from other US mining companies. Junior Portuguese
geologists receive less pay than American junior geologists, and when they
see that they are doing the same work as the US geologists, they have
become bitter and have reported same to the Portuguese government, in
Lisbon. Un to June 1953, there has been no remedial action taken by the
Portuguese government.
This same situation applies to the mineral exploration operations in
Mozambique,
