Institute of Experimental Biology
The Institute of Experimental Biology in Zagreb was established 27 March
1950 by the Yugoslav Academy of Science and Culture
The basic functions of the institute are to do research in, study, and
solve biological problems, contribute to the professional training and improve-
ment of scientific workers In biology, and help the people's agencies and inter-
ested establishments utilize the results of the institute's scientific research
work.
The institute works under the administration of the Section for Natural and
Medical Sciences of the Yugoslav Academy of Science and Culture in Zagreb.
The director of the institute is Dr Vale Vouk, The Professional Council

Institute of physics
The Institute of Physics in Ljubljana, Novi Trg 3 and 4, was established
in 1947 on the basis of the law governing the Slovenian Academy of Science and
Culture. .
The basic functions of the institute are to make it possible for recog-
nized scientists to do experimental work on scientific and scientific-technical
problems in physics, and on problems involving the practical utilization of re-
sults achieved in such work as they apply to the economy, technology , and medi-
cine; and to acquaint young graduate physicists with scientific methods of work
in physics.
The institute publishes information regarding its work through the publi-
cations of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Culture
The institute is under the administration of the Mathematics, Physics,
and Technical Research Section of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Culture.

The Institute of Biology of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sarajevo, Bulevar Crvene
Armije 7, operates on the basis of the law published in the Sluzbeni List,
31 December 1947. ,
The institute has two botany sections for the study of blossoming and non-
section plants, a zoology section for the study of invertebrates, an ento-
mology section, a botanical garden, and a natural history museum.
The basic functions of the institute are the planned organization of the
biology service for the needs of biology instruction, agriculture, forestry,
and public health; and the organization of the biology service for scientific
research on living organisms.

The basic function of the institute is to study functional derangements
in the human organism and the connections between the physically well and sick.
The work of the institute consists of experimental research on animals,
study of diseases affecting people in Yugoslavia, and application of the
knowl- edge gained.

The institute has a biology section, a biochemistry section, and a section
which gathers statistics on human nourishment.
The institute has seven regular and 11 honorary scientific associates.
The basic function of the institute is to study nourishment in connection
with the manner of life, climatic conditions, type of work activity, and age of
maturity in Yugoslavia.

tion composed of community and children's hygiene departments; and a food sec-

The basic functions of the bureau are to investigate and solve problems
in hygiene and preventive medicine, improve and introduce new work methods and
resources in hygiene and preventive medicine; and give professional help to hy-
giene and epidemiology establishments and similar establishments in Croatia.

Institute of Balneology and Climatology
The Institute of Balneology and Climatology, Zagreb, Demetrova 18, was
established by order of the Ministry of Public Health on 22 August 1949.
The institute has a section for the organization and development of health

for medical research, a section for chemistry and physics research, and a sec-
tion for hydrology, geology, and meteorology research.

Serbian Chemical Society
The Serbian Chemical Society, Belgrade, Bulevar Crvene Armije 73, was es-
tablished in 1897, working mostly in close cooperation with specialists con-
nected with Belgrade University. Since 1945, the society has broadened its func-
tions and included new ones. Its functions are to unite all scientific and pro-
fessional workers, work on advancing chemical knowledge and popularizing it,
and advance its members in theory and practice.
The society works through its sections for popularizing chemical knowledge,
teaching, and work with youth.
The society has 243 members and has a branch in Novi Sad.
The society publishes the Glasnik Bemiskog Drustva (Chemical Society Courier)
quarterly.

pendent society before the war, but was an affiliate of the Paris Biological So-
ciety and published information regarding its work in publications of that so-
ciety which were exclusively in French. The society was completely reorganized
and established as the Serbian Biological Society in 1947.
The functions of the society are to gather biological information with the
aim of advancing and propagating biological science, aid research in biology,
extend the knowledge of biology to the masses, and aid in improving teaching of
biology in the schools.

The functions of the association are to work on the professional and scien-
tific advancement of physicians, examine and study problems of health service,
and try to raise the health level of Slovenia in accordance with the instruc-
tions of the Ministry of Public Health
The association has organised one section to date, in dermatology.
The association has 360 members and seven branches. located in Maribor,
Celje, Novo Mesto, Postojna, Brezlce, Slovenjgradec, and Jesenice.

The functions of the association are to raise the professional and scien-

give help to the people's agencies and organizations in the health education of
the populace, and cooperate with like associations in promoting medical research
and protecting public health.

The functions of the association are to study pharmaceutical science, in-
form its members of new discoveries, and help raise the professional and ideo-
logical level of its members.

Federation of Medical Associations of Yugoslavia
The Federation of Medical Associations of Yugoslavia, Belgrade, Zeleni
Venac 1, was established in 1946.
The functions of the federation are to coordinate the work of medical as-
sociations, organize professional conferences on general and specific problems
of a federal character, organize professional and scientific congresses as well
as general congresses for individual branches or sections for physicians through-
out Yugoslavia, represent Yugoslav physicians abroad, and publish the Acta medica
Jugoslavica.
The federation includes the Medical Association of Serbia, the Society of
Physicians of Croatia, the Medical Association of Slovenia, the Association of
Physicians of Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Medical Association of Macedonia, and the
Association of Physicians of Montenegro.
The federation works through its sections on internal medicine, ophthal-
mology, stomatology, gynecology, neuropsychiatry, rheumatology and balneology,
dermatology and venereology, hygiene, pediatrics, tuberc...iosis, social welfare
doctors, radiology, otolaryngology, physical culture, and cardiology.
