VALUE OF VITAMIN Bt IN ACUTE POISONING BY CYANIDES
The author injected thiamine in dogs which were given lethal doses
of potassium cyanide. In one series of tests, one milligram per kilo-
gram weight of thiamine was intravenously and subcutaneously injected
3 minutes and 10 minutes, respectively, prior to intravenous injections
of 3 milligrams per kilogram weight of potassium cyanide in these dogs.
No fatal results occurred in these tests.
Intravenous injection of 1-2 milligrams per kilogram weight of thia-
mine one minute after the injection of 3 milligrams per kilogram weight
potassium cyanide prevented death in two out of five cases.
Thus, the beneficial activity of vitamin B1 in severe poisoning by
cyanides is successfully established.
It is recommended that this vitamin be made available to those
people who are exposed to the danger of cyanide poisoning.
