Peiping. 30 January (Hsin..hua) - With the sanction of the Central People's
gover:zn:ent, the Ministry of Railways will put into effect cn 1 February 1951
on all. the railways of the country a 30 percent increase in passenger fares.
Thin increase applies to ordinary and express trains, sleeping cars, and other
mtscellaneous charges, ex.ext that charges fox baggage and parcels or packages
wi'L''L he increased by only 10 percent above those in effect on 1 December 1950,
After the change, the rate per passenger for hard-seat accommodations on
ordinary trains will be 136.50 yuan, People's notes, per ki.]ometer, in both
north and south Chine.; in the. Northeast, it will be 936 yuan, Northeast notes,
per passenger per kilometer. The cost of hard-seat accommodations on ordinary

CANTON RAILWAY SUBBUREAU UPS RATES -- Hong Kong, Kung-shang Jih-pao, 1 = 2 Feb` 51
Canton, 31 January 1951 -- The Canton Railway Subbureau, on instructions
from the Heng-yang Railway Bureau, will put into effect as of 1 February 1951,
an increase of rates for passenger traffic, baggage, and parcel service. Pas-
senger tickets, tickets on express trains, sleeping car tickets, student term
tickets, special service fees, and fines in connection with passenger traffic
will be increased 30 percent above the 1 December 3.950 rates, Baggage and
parcel fees, and the minimum charges for such fees, will be increased 10 per-
cent above the 1 December: 1950 rates, with the exception that the minimum
charges on "special arrangement" packages shall remain as of 1 December 1950.
it may be noted that the 1 December 1950 rates were only 34 percent of
those in force before the war Yuly 193f70
The cost of tickets from mid-summer 1950 to 31 January 1951 was'Agsed on
a rate of 105 yuan, People's notes per person per kilometer for hard-seat
accommodations on ordinary trains.
According to the new rates, the cost of tickets for hard-seat accommoda-
tions on ordinary trains from Carton to other points will be as follows.

Tickets for soft-seat accommodations are double those for hard-seat accomoda-
tionse Tickets on express trains cost more than on ordinary trains. Sleeping
car ticket rates are for one night only.
The minimum charge for baggage will be 3,300 yuan, The minimum charge for
parcels of a general nature or of perishable fresh fruit will be 3,300 yuan;
for those coming under the "special arrangement" category, the minimum charge
will be 100 yuano Baggage will be charged at the rate of 1.10 yuan per kilo-
gram for each 10 kilometers. Parcels containing goods of a general nature will
be charged at the rate of 4,40 yuan per kilogram for each 10 kilometers. Par-
cels containing fresh' perishable goods will be charged at the rate of 1.65
yuan per kilogram for each 10 kilometers,

REPORT PROGRESS ON LUNG-RAI RR EXTENSION -- T'ai-yuan, Shansi Jih-pao, 16 Dec 50
Sian, 11 December (Hsin-hua) Work on the extension of the Lung-Hai Rail-
road from Pao-chi through the steep and narrow gorges of the Wei Ho to T'ien-
shui, and from Tien-shui toward Lan-chou, continued during October at the
rate of 10,000 man-days of labor for the month. Up to the end of October
1950, 4.356,000 fang of earthwork on the former section, and 2,200,000 fang
on the latter section, had been completed. In past years, landslides in the
gorges affecting the railway averaged 430,000 fang, and in 1949 they amounted
to 640,000 fang. But in 1950, as a result of work accomplished, they amounted

TO TRAIN SZECHWAN RR WORKERS -- Shanghai, Chieh-fang Jih-pao, 27 Dec 50
Shanghai -- On orders of the Ministry of Railways, a team of 24 men experi-
enced in road-maintenance work has been selected by the Shanghai Railway Bureau
to go to Chungking, where they are to serve as a model team for the instruction
of Szechwan laborers on the Ch'eng-tu--Chungking Railway now under construc-
tion. The team left Shanghai on 25 December 1950 and expects to return in about
6 months.
REPAIRS UNDER WAY ON T'UNG-P'U RR -- T'ai-yuan, Shansi Jih-pao, 16 Dec 50
The Engineering Department of the T'ai-yuan Railway Bureau advertises for
contractors to present bids for the construction of three temporary wooden
bridges along the line of the T'ung-p'u Railway in Shansi, in the section
between Yuan-p'ing and Hsuan-kang-chen. Properly registered contractors de-
siring to present bids, besides applying for copies of the specifications,
should personally inspect the bridge sites, which are located at the following
kilometer points:
1. At kilometer 203 plus 473.7 meters -- a seven-span 10.5-meter I.B. Zei]
wooden frame bridge.
2. At kilometer 209 plus 484.8 meters -- an eight-span 10.5-meter I.B.5i]
wooden frame bridge.
3. At kilometer 195 Plus 589 meters -- an 18-span 4.5-meter bridge with
tracks to be attached.
All materials are to be provided by the Engineering Department. The cun-
tract is to cover all the labor involved in excavations, concrete foundations,
and erecting of stagings and structures.
