Frightening scenario
has Washington abuzz
Washington is abuzz about a new
spine-chilling book Acropolis has
scheduled for fall publication: "The
Assassination of Gorbachev." It's
hard to know where fact ends and
fiction begins in this novel by
Maroun Khoury, 31, a Lebanese-
born, American-trained physician
who is well-known in international
political circles. He's served as a
consultant to Time magazine on the
Sharon libel case and to attorneys
for the families of hostages in
the TWA hijacking.
The controversial novel criticizes
the Trilateral Commission, Armand
Hammer and others for contribut-
ing too much money to the Soviet
Union. "Why should we strengthen
the other edge of their sword as we
did in Japan?" asks Dr. Khoury.
In the novel, a hostile general
takes over after the Soviet leader is
killed, proposes an alternative to
perestroika and glasnost, and
swiftly invades western Europe by
coordinating efforts with Presi-
dents Castro and Ortega.
Former CIA Director William
Colby, after reading the man u-
- called the scenario "fright-
emn but ossible:'
portion o the proceeds from
Dr. Khoury's book will go to a foun-
dation he's established, "Semper-Fi
Lebanon." The money will be used
to educate children of servicemen
who died in Lebanon.
