MAP COVERAGE REPORT (U)
MARCH 1984
INTRODUCTION
This report lists maps covering Lebanon. The maps, all available through the NPIC Map Library, vary
in their content, scale, size, date of production, and publisher. They were selected for inclusion in this
document because of their possible utility in the imagery exploitation process. (U)
Most of the maps listed in this publication are produced by the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) or
the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and are available for retention. Orders should identify maps by
series and number. Some maps are available only on a loan basis; however, photocopies are available for
retention. Orders for loan maps should give the complete call number. (U)
The scale of a map describes the relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding
distance on the ground, usually expressed as a ratio. The choice of map scale depends on the intended
use of the map. Scale determines the amount of detail shown on a map. A large-scale map shows more
detail but less area, while asmall-scale map shows less detail but a larger area. For example:
Large-scale maps (more detail, less area): 1:10,000-1:25,000
Medium-scale maps: 1:50,000-1:250,000
Small-scale maps (less detail, more area): 1:500,000-1:22,000,000
The terms large and small scale are comparative, rather than absolute, so there are no precise definitions
of the boundaries between them. Maps of continental areas and the world are all in small scale, however,
and town plans are large scale. (U)
The NPIC Map Library continues to work very closely with the CIA Cartography Center, Map Ser-
vices Division, DMA, and other map-producing agencies to rocure the most current maps available to
support analysts' requirements. This report was prepared b NPIC Map Lim-
ments may be directed to the Chief, NPIC Map Library Room 15303, telephone or

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Location
Lebanon, on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, is bounded on the north and east by Syria
and on the south by Israel. (U)
Area: Approximately 10,400 sq km (3,400 sq mi), about four-fifths
the size of Connecticut (U)
Capital: Beirut-pop. 702,000 (est. 1980) (U)
Major Cities: Sidon -pop. 24,740 (est.1980)
Tripoli-pop. 175,00() (est. 1980)
Tyre-pop. 14,000 (est. 1980)
Zahlah-pop. 46,800 (est. 1980) (U)
People
Thc~ population of Lebanon (2.6 million, est. 1980) comprises Christians and Muslims. Although no
official census has been taken since 1932, past government registration figures have indicated that the
population is almost evenly divided between these two religions. In recent years, however, Muslims have
claimed that they are in the majority, a factor which contributed to the tension preceding the 1975-76
civil strife. (U)
Economy
GNP: Over $4.1 billion (est. 1980) (U)
Trade: Exports-$886 million (est. 1981)
Imports-$3.2 billion (est. 1981)
Major suppliers-Western Europe and US (U)
Industry: Service industries, food processing, textiles, cement,
oil refining, chemicals, some metal fabricating, tourism (U)
Agriculture: Fruits, wheat, corn, barley, potatoes, tobacco, olives, onions (U)
Defense
Since 1976, the United States has supported the Lebanese government's efforts to rebuild its military
and redeploy it throughout the country. To this end, the US has provided more than $100 million in
military assistance since 1977 for both equipment and training. France also provides military equipment
and training. (C)
MAP LISTINGS
Base Maps
Base maps are basic outline maps that show major cities, transportation, and administrative divisions.
They can be valuable tools for preparing briefings and for illustrating reports. CIA produces the following
base maps of Lebanon for retention:

Briefing Maps
In many instances, maps are an essential part of an oral presentation. Many briefing maps showing
significant details are effective visual aids. Some maps are more suitable than others for this purpose. The
following maps, all available for retention, were selected for this category because of their size and their
distinctive presentation of administrative divisions, major transportation routes, and major cities. (U)

Topographic Maps
Topographic maps portray the shape and elevation of terrain, usually by contours or color shading.
These maps also show major cities, transportation, and administrative divisions. Complete topographic
map coverage of Lebanon is available at various scales. (U)
1:250,000 Scale Maps
DMA produces three versions of the 1501-Joint Oper;~tions Graphic (JOG) series of Lebanon (Figure
1). Each version is identified in the lower margin of the map as Joint Operations Graphic (Air), Joint
Operations Graphic (Ground), or Joint Operations Graphic (Radar). (S)
The JOG-Air series contains detailed information on air-related facilities such as runway lengths and
patterns, radio facilities, and obstructions. The highest terrain elevation in each 15-minute quadrangle is
identified by large open-face figures. Elevations and contours are given in feet. (U)
The JOG-Ground series is prepared for use by ground units, and only stable or permanent air
facilities are identified. Elevations and contours are located in the same positions as on the air version, but
are given in meters. (U)
The JOG-Radar series is the same as JOG-Air and JCIG-Ground except that it depicts target refer-
ences with BE Numbers, and the elevations are in feet. (S)
