Observations made in Stettin (0 5i./Q. 50) on 29 June 1950
did not indicate that the Soviet garrison had been rein-
forced. There were no rumors among the population about
imminent Soviet reinforcements. There was, however, a
f;ronounoed war pdsychosis which resulted in increased b? ying
of food
The uninhabitable woods east of Forst (0 52/A 77) was not a
restricted area iirior to mid-June 1950. The area was only
su,-~erficially controlled by the 1--olish Border Guard Forces
bush peasants said that Soviet troops had been concen-
trated in the area around Sorau (0 52/B 16) on a large scale o
They said that checking of persons and identity pagers was
expe,ptionally thorough in that area. *
The concentration of Soviet troops in the
Sorau area and the concurrent checking of identity f:ap,ers
may have been connected with Soviet field exercises at the
Neuhammer troop training grounds.
