Ulan Ude, the canital of the Buryat-Mongol ASSR, is located 100 kms. east of Lake Baikal. The nearest cities are Irkutsk endChita. The nearest mountains are the Burvat4iongn1 mountains, stretching from south to north. enn The nearest river iseSelenga, running to the west. It is an old city, built in about the 18t1i century. The city was damaged during World War II. 2. The street wstem in the center of the city constitutes a gridiron, but in the outer quarters the streets are irregular and crooked. Streets in the center of the city are illuminated by electricity; the other streeta Are not illuminated. Street signs are written on white sheet-iron plates, 35 x 15 cm, with black writing. On one side of the street, the house numbers are odd and on the other side they are even. 3. Typical buildings of the city are as follows; District Soviets Party buildings Bank: Hotels Technical School:: three-story, grey two-story, red three-story, gray two-story, pink two-story, Ted Timber, mud-brick, and reinforced concrete are the principal building materials used. The buildings in the center of the city are two-story; in otherparts of the city they are all one-story. Roofs consist of cor- rugated sheet iron, timber, or tile. The buildings are white-washed or painted' brown, black, rod, or grey, 4. The most important streets are Leninskaya Street (central)and Baikal Street. The population of Ulan Ude is 70,000. Ralf of the population consist? of Ruseinns and the other half Of Bunyate. There are no ethnic minorities sad no foreigners in the city. Although the Soviet Constitution provides equal rights for different ethnic grave living in the Soviet .Union, tido provision exists only on paper. In practice the Russians are the chaos= nreupt This is true all over the Soviet Union, in the independent as woll az the autonomous republics of the USSR. All the other ethnic groups ere treated as stbjecte of the Russians. For example, innUlar Ude it is always the Russians who are right 'whenever there are disagreements and diuputes. The freight station is 20 meters south of the city station. Ulan Ude is connected hy rail with irkatek and Chita. Six to eight pasoenger trains and about eight freight trains pass through Ulan Ude daily. During the war a freight train need to pass every 15 minutes. Tito trains are drawn by ntean engines. 8. The military airfield is merked nA No. 39 and the civilian airfield as NO. 40 on the attached city plan. There are no hangars on either field and no underground inetallations. Ulan Ude is linked by air with Ittabarovok, Irkutsk, Novosibirek, Erasnoyarek, Sverdlovsk, and Moekow. 9. The SelangaDtrer runs along the western side of the city. River boats and other craft sail on this river. On the south side of the city there to a OW. 25X1 10. Tbere are buses and taxio in operatiou in the city. Nnterprisas which employ at toast 1,000 workers are the railway repair shon (No. 23 on the city plan) and Anrcraft rectory No. 99 (No. 27 on the city plan). Tho latter recently built fighters of the LA.-9 type. At present this plant is being converted to the production of jet-propelled aircraft. The workers are free to look for work on their own initiative. Uages and working conditions are the same as in Chita.' ? 12. Prices are fixed by the Burnet-Mongol ASSR administration,but there is aloe a black market. Sugar and margarine are scarce, but all vegetables and other foodstuffs can be found. 13. The andand DmamIlmmat newepapers are published in Ulan Ude. Moscow papers are also sold in the city. There is a radio trans- mitter (Ho. 18 on the plan). 14. Venereal dinettes to very common among the Buxyats. Gonorrhea and syphilis cases are the most frequent. Hospitals are numbered 41, 42, and 43 on the city plan. They are called Olbastnaya (41), City (42)0 and. Irodniki (3). 15. The Progres and lard= Cinemas show Soviet and anti-American films. lnothall and physical training are among the forme of recreation enjoyed. 16. The 280th Air Transport Regiment and a tank and artillery unit are located in Ulan Ude., 17.
