Among the principal products of Tesla Karlin National Enterprise in Prague- Karlin are telephone exchanges, telephone sets, and other telecommunication equipment. During the last months of 1953 normal production was considerably hampered by an acute shortage of metals such as copper, nickel, high-grade steel, etc., which resulted in the inability of the factory to carry out export orders of telephone exchanges ___Large numbers of workers in the factory were idle at that time and drew only a basic salary. The shortage of raw materials eased at the beginning of 19511., and normal production has been resumed. 2. The factory also turns out telecommunication equipment such as field telephones for the armed forces. Research and experiments with a new type of field telephone for the Army were started in 1953. At the first trials of the new equipment, it was discovered that it did not function properly in severe cold. The telephones were also tried. out during the Army maneuvers in 1953. Tesla Strasnice 3. Tesla Strasnice National Enterprise in Prague-Strasnice employs approximately 800 workers in two shifts, the majority of -them women. Approximately 300 television sets .are turned out by the factory per month, but a large number of sets is reportedly lying in the factory's storerooms due to lack of customers. 1.. Some production of a military character, believed to be concerned with radar equipment, is carried on by the factory under the greatest secrecy, protected by strict security precautions. Part of the production area is "off. limits" to all factory employees not working there. 5. A broadcasting station, believed to be controlled by the Army, is located near the factory premises.
