8. (Unclassified - GLC) Called Guy McConnell, Senate Appropriations
Committee staff, and alerted him to the fact that we were sending him a copy
of the Director's reply to Senator Edward Kennedy's request of 24 April for
answers to questions concerning electronic surveillance. I told him. we were
sending copies to our Senate Subcommittees to keep them informed.
g'eY; called concerning our letters to OMB on 1-l. R. . and IT. R. 1.532,
Representative Elizabeth Holtzman's bills on appropriated funds and covert
action programs respectively. He asked if we had been in touch with the
House Armed Services Committee recently on these bills to see if they
anticipated any action.. I said we had not but we would. contact them today.
He said if we can be sure the bills will die on their own accord, OMB will.
pass the letters. He said that CIA was the only agency that has been asked.

10. (Unclassified - GLC) Jay Sourwine, Senate Internal Security
Subcommittee staff, called and asked if we could check into an item in
Saturday's Washington Post concerning a Mr. An, from the Peking Embassy
in Toronto who allegedly was ousted from Toronto because he was caught
spying. Sourwine said he asked the FBI for information on this man but they
said he was "not their baby" that it was strictly up to the Mounties. I told
him I would let him know if we had anything on this.

DIA, called concerning
the letter they received from Representative Patricia Schroeder concerning
the Sam Adams article. He said he had talked withi who said the
STATINTL DIA and CIA letters were almost identical. said he hoped we could
cooperate with each other on our replies, as we had done on a letter to
Representative Les .Aspire some months ago. I told him we were working on the
STATINTL issue and would let them know before we responded to Schroeder. I told
about the many calls we have been receiving from Representative Aspin's
s a people on various subjects. He said everytime the Secretary of Defense
