SUBJECT: Topic for Discussion at DCI Breakfast Meeting
with Secretary Haig on 15 June 1982.
NAMIBIA-ANGOLA
1. Africa Division has been advised by the Department of
State that, at the DCI-Secretary of State Breakfast Meeting on
Tuesday, 15 June 1982, Secretary of State Alexander Haig
intends to brief the Director on the current status of the
Namibia independence negotiations. The Secretary will also
discuss current U.S. relations with the National Union for
the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) of Dr. Jonas Savimbi,
as well as UNITA's need for foreign assistance other than that
provided by the South Africans.
2. The briefings and discussion topics proposed by the
Secretary are intended as a follow-on to a meeting held on 29
May 1982 between Assistant Secretary of State for African
Affairs Chester Crocker, ADDO Clair George, and Chief, AF.
National Intelligence Officer for Africa, who has tasked the
Directorate for Intelligence with appropriate responses.
3. If the Director so desires, Assistant Secretary
Crocker will make himself available for more detailed
briefings than those which will be provided by Secretary
Haig.
