MEMORANDUM FOR:
FROM:
Chief, Legislative Liaison Division
SUBJECT: House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Worldwide Briefing,
27 January 1982
1. As you are aware, the DCI will present his Worldwide Intelligence
Briefing before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday, 27 January 1982,
at 1000 hours in Room 2117 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Agency security
personnel will sweep the hearing room prior to the DCI's appearance and monitor
the proceedings as per normal. A transcript will be taken.
2. Although last year's Worldwide was completed in the morning, the
Committee would like the DCI or his principal backups to be available to come
back in the afternoon if necessary for further questioning.
3. This briefing should go pretty smoothly. HASC rarely calls on us
for support since they are no longer an official Oversight Committee and when
they do it is generally for information seeking-type briefings, which are
well received usually, and not probing, inquisition-style hearings on Agency
internal management.
4. On Wednesday, they would like the DCI to cover the major "hot-spots"
in the world, as he did last year. The staff has not as yet--and probably will
not--prepare detailed questions prior to Wednesday. From discussions with the
staff, however, we have learned certain areas that the Members are particularly
interested in and on which most questions will probably focus. A list of
these topics is attached.
5. Attached for the DCI's briefing book are a briefing sheet listing
the HASC Members and key staffers, biographic profiles of the Members, and
a copy of a worldwide map that, if you agree, will be passed out to the Members.
6. Once you have determined who will be accomppying the DCI on Wednesday,
please let us know so that a formal witness list can/bb nrenared.
