Gates Deputy Director for Intelligence SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report, 24 - 28 May 1982 DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks ALA analysts briefedi n southern Africa at the request of the SOVA and OGI prepared four briefing papers on Soviet natural gas to support the DCI at a 24 May 1982 NSC meeting. SOVA analysts prepared a briefing on Soviet responses to the Falklands crisis for the DCI prior to his meeting with Secretary Haig. Of Special Interest This Week ALA prepared a memo for Judge Clark on Cuban assistance to Argentina. ALA and EURA briefed members of the SSCI and the Senate Armed Services Committee on the Falkland Islands situation. OCR briefed Deputy Secretary of Transportation Darrell Trent and his Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Affairs on various French personalities and on the structure of the French bureaucracy. OEA completed a paper on the Japanese Yen requested by Undersecretary Olmer of Commerce. OGI briefed NSA representatives on the structure of DDI's terrorism effort. Revwvon1 flay 88gner 25X1 Approved For Release 2007/02/23: CIA-RDP83M00914R002900020005-8 OGI published "Prospects for the Arlan Oilfield," an assessment of the production outlook for the second largest oilfield in the Soviet Union. The paper is a milestone for the joint CIA-Contractor engineering study of Soviet oilfields. OGI provided Undersecretary of Defense Ikle an assessment of Norwegian gas projects including expected development time and projected cost of delivered gas. OSWR briefed FDA and NIH delegates to the US/Japan Conference on Biotechnology. OSWR briefed the SSCI on the Soviet ABM and laser threat and the Soviet Space Program. Looking Ahead OSWR will brief the Director's S&T Advisory Panel and an OSD Advisory Panel on developments in the technology transfer area. OSWR is preparing briefing notes and will accompany the Executive Director to an IEEE round table discussion on managing the flow of technical information.
