Action Requested: Decide whether to lecture on American Sponsored Resistance Movements Behind Enemy Lines During World War II for the Smith- sonian Resident Associate Program or send a recommendation for Joseph E. Persico to do so in your place. 2. Background: Martin K. Gordon, a professional military historian, currently with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has requested that you give a lecture on American sponsored resistance movements behind enemy lines during World War II. The lecture would be part of a course, "America Fights World War II," that Mr. Gordon is organizing for the Smithsonian Resident Associate Program. He would like you to base your lecture on your experiences during the war and on your subsequent thinking about the resistance movement. This would be scheduled for Thursday, July 15, from 6:00-7:30 p.m., in the Smithsonian Complex, National Gallery of American Art, 9th and G Sts., N.W., Washington, DC_. As an alternative, we recommend Mr. Joseph E. Persico who is a retired State and Foreign Service Officer and has lectured on this subject previously. Mr. Persico is also the author of Piercing the Reich: The Penetration of Nazi Germany by American Secret Agents During World War II; New York; Viking Press; 1979. 3. Recommendation: Sign one of the attached letters either accepting the lecture engagement or recommending Mr. Persico. It is your decision as to whichever fits with your schedule and interest.
