I have no quarrel with the DDS responses to Recommenda-
tions Nos. 3, 8, and 61 pertaining to his directorate.
I remain persuaded that a mileage reimbursement rate
higher or lower than 1Z per mile should have Headquarters
approval (Recommendation No. 12). For example, we cited
the case of who reduced the
reimbursement rate from 1Z to 6~ on the grounds that 12'
was just too high. Yet figures at his station on his own official
vehicle showed that it was costing the Agency 14.5 per mile
to own and operate the vehicle. However, I suggest the DDS
go ahead with his proposed revision of the regulation and we
will take a very careful look at the equitability and uniformity
of mileage reimbursement rates when we next inspect an
operating division.
