Approved For Release 20 IA-RDP78-04924A000200060007-9 W 8 May 1969 MEEMORANDUM FOR All Division Chiefs/ORD SPG Program Manager, SUBJECT : Briefing on Memory Metal Technology from will give a briefing on the status and potential applications of memory metal technology on Monday, 19 May 1969, in Room 607 Ames bldg., at 10:00. 2. If you plan to attend, please call Norma X2763. 3. Certain alloys, if deformed from the annealed shape, will revert to the original shape when heated to a transformation temperature determined by the alloy composition. There is considerable energy associated with the transformation of NiTi alloy, and remarkable changes in ductility, damping coefficient, electr' a1 resistance and other properties. With NASA funding, has studied this phenomenon to find out why it works and to ,wake it work predictably. Possible applications include salt-erecting structures, heat engines which convert heat _._wectly to mechanical energy, heat-actuated fasteners or ;_~,"--fasteners, and temperature-sensitive triggers and control devices.
