Thank you very much for the critiques of the ICAF curriculum
which you forwarded to me. They are just what I wanted-objective,
succinct and focus on items where improvement may be needed. In-
cidentally, I note a number of criticisms concerning the writing require-
ments. Early this year, I decided to give the students another option,
i. e. , additional electives in lieu of the major research paper. This
action seems to have given the students an alternative which permits them
to broaden their knowledge via additional electives or, on the other hand,
to deepen their knowledge in a particular area via a research paper.
The elimination of the overseas trip is a disappointment to all of
us. It was dictated by the DoD Committee on Excellence in Education
chaired by Deputy Secretary of Defense Clements. I am seeking to get
this modified. Even this year, I plan to send 7 students (not nearly
enough) on overseas trips with the National War College where such a
trip will enhance the research effort they are undertaking; for example,
foreign military sales.
