I believe this clarifies the DDI position. The FBIS satellite coverage is, in part, to replace radio coverage currently being lost by poor reception of CIF. DD FBIS 4 EXEC. E". LOGNOTE - Executive and Planning Staff, 3 June 1982 I called , DDI/CRES/Requirements and Services STAT Group , this morning to request further clarification of the STAT Comptroller's "statement at the budget hearing that DDI had no interest in FBIS reporting on Indonesia. Dave was surprise by the question in v r tl)p rtance attached to Indonesia, but he said he would ask Iwo is responsible for East Asia, to check it STAT out and call me back. called this afternoon to say that he had talked to the analysts STAT responsible for Indonesia and couldn't understand where the idea had originated. The analysts consider media monitoring an important, valuable source of political and economic information and could not identify anything that FBIS is now doing that they felt was excess to their needs. Nothing that is being done now should be eliminated, according to those he had talked to, and indeed, more coverage, if possible, would be useful. suggested that a misunderstanding may have arisen with the STAT Comptroller if the question had been posed as a choice between satellite monitoring and traditional broadcast monitoring. He said the DDI analysts support steps, such as satellite monitoring, to ensure continuing access to media sources in the future. That support for satellite monitoring could have been misconstrued as a lack of support for traditional radio broadcast monitoring.
