SUBJECT: Request for Interview
1. Action Requested: Decline an on-the-record interview with Ralph
Nader.
2. Background: Ralph Nader, Presidential Accountability Group, has
requested an interview with you. He is preparing profiles of 100 senior
Administration officials to be issued in book form. The purpose of the
interview would be to discuss your background, major CIA issues, and your
policies. In checking with other offices we have found:
? Nader has not approached the White House.
? He has not approached the FBI.
? State Department turned down his request to interview Secretary
Haig and several others.
? Secretaries Weinberger and Carlucci consented to be interviewed,
largely because Weinberger and Nader are friendly.
3. Staff Position: Public Affairs recommends you decline the inter-
view. Other senior Administration officials have done so and you should
therefore not be singled out for criticism for declining the interview.
4. Recommendation: Agree to permit Public Affairs to decline Nader's
request for an interview.
