US Ambassador to the UN Jeane Kirkpatrick requested that DDI officers brief her on the Falkland Islands crisis at her State Department office on 8 April 1982. 2. (ALA) analyzed the Argentine perspective. He outlined the sequence of events leading to the invasion, described President Galtieri's domestic political situation, ar}d assessed the Argentine response to a variety of possible solutions to the crisis. II - v1 A 3.1 ( ) addressed the British response. He discussed the prospects of the Thatcher overnment's survival and the room for diplomatic maneuver in the current situation. 4. OGI) provided an overview of UN involvement in the Falkland .crisis. He discussed the relationship between the United Nations and the Rio Treaty and also discussed the so-called "Hong Kong solution" to the present crisis. F_ 5. Geographic memorandums on the Falkland Islands, Nicaragua, and El Salvador were given to Ambassador Kirkpatrick. 6. ALA) had come prepared to discuss Central American issues incl ding Guatemala, El Salvador and Panama. The briefing on the Falkland Islands and the spirited discussions between the Ambassador, her staff members, and the brief ers monopolized the two hours. An attempt will be made to reschedule the Central American portion of the briefing at a later date.
