MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT : HSCA and Shevchenko
1. I met with Mr. Blakey and Mr. Cornwell at 1630
yesterday afternoon at the HSCA offices to discuss their
meeting with Shevchenko.
2. I said that Shevchenko had made three requests,
which had been relayed to me as follows:
a. He wanted any appearance before the
Committee to be in executive session. I had
replied that at this time it was probable that he
would be interviewed only, but that his request could
be accommodated.
b. He wanted his attorney present. I had
replied that the rules of the Committee permitted
this.
c. He wanted "interrogatories" in advance.
I had replied that this would be difficult, as
questions would arise from answers, but that I
would request that there be some advance indica-
tion of the subject matter.
3. I told Messrs. Blakey and Cornwell that arrange-
ments for the interview should be through Shevchenko's
attorney, whose name, address and telephone number I passed
to Mr. Blakey on a slip of paper as follows:
William A. Geimar
Nelson and Harding
1101 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.
457-0120
I said that Mr. Geimar expected a call from Mr. Blakey, and
that I had been informed that Shevchenko was available during
Approved For Release 2007/03/03: CIA-RDP81 M00980R000600290010-4
this week. Meetings would be at Mr. Geimar's office.
4. Mr. Blakey asked why I' had not passed this informa-
tion by telephone. I replied that we did not wish to discuss
arrangements for meeting with Shevchenko by telephone or in
writing. It was my understanding that Shevchenko currently
prefers to resettle in this country under his new name,
which may hold some uncertainties for him, but this seems
his present intent. They asked if he was still in his
apartment, to which I replied that I did not know, observ-
ing that we were not in a position to exercise any control
over his decisions at this point--he has a green card and
is no longer under parole to us, he has independent
financial means at this time, and reportedly is something
of a stubborn man. Mr. Blakey observed that they had best
interview him quickly if they.are to do so at all, indicating
that Shevchenko is somewhat exposed, and laughed. I responded
that while this may be somewhat macabre humor there may be
something in what he said.
5. Nothing else was discussed.
