At the time of observation of the airfield at Semipalatinsk (N 50-28, E 80-13), the weather was cloudy and rain had just ended. No unusual activity or special guards or troops were observed. Security appeared to be very casual and activity was leisurely. The airfield, which is accurately located on the WAC chart of the area, has a new concrete runway greater in length than 5,000 feet and estimated by source to be 7,000 feet. The runway is bisected by a shorter old runway of concrete sheds, but no large hangars or special shops. three MIG 15s in a fenced-in area near the sna No radar facilities, AA positions, or troop concentrations were observed near the field. No other airfield was seen in the area. 2. Ayaguz airfield has a dirt and grass runway, a small tower, but no other facilities. Approximately 12 old biplanes of the crop duster type and a 15-place Aeroflot helicopter were observed on the field. Comments: 1. Previous information as of 1951 showed two concrete block runways at the Semipalatinsk airfield. Each was estimated to be 4,000 x 160 feet and had concrete taxi loops connecting the ends of the runways. Runways had a N/S and a E/W orientation and both had unlimited extensibility. 2. Ayaguz airfield is located at approximately N 47-56, E 80-26. AIR EV x FBI AEC X OSI X OC / 25X1 25X1 25X1 (Note: Washington distribution indicated by "X"; Field distribution by "#'".)
