1. On 9 July 1953, before his departure for the Communist-sponsored International
Teachers' Conference in East Berlin, 21 - 2L July, Cesar GODOY Urrutia, Com-
munist leader and Secretary for Intellectual Matters of the Chilean Communist
Party (PCChy, was given a testimonial dinner at'the headquarters of the Union
de Profesores de Chile. In response to laudatory speeches, GODOY thanked his
friends for the dinner and for the funds collected to defray his expenses,
which he stated would enable him to travel in a much better state than he had
on past occasions. It was announced that a petition had been presented to the
Minister of Education to reinstate GODOY to his official status of a professor
and that it was expected that by the time of his return to Chile this petition
would have been favorably acted upon.
2. It was further announced at this dinner that Maria MARCHANT Riquelme, who is
now in Europe,, would attend the above-mentioned teachers' congress as a member
of the Chilean delegation. A number of teachers had wanted to attend the
Berlin congress but lacked sufficient funds to go to Europe. It was stated,
however, that plans were under way to arrange for a large number of Chilean
teachers to attend the Sixth American Teachers' Congress, to be held in. Jan-
