Approved For Release 2006/11/07: CIA-RDP81 M00980R002800030013-5 JOURNAL OFFICE OF LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL Wednesday - 25 October 1978 1. (Internal Use Only ME) FOIA I called Ms. Cahill, in the office of Senator William D. Hathaway (D., Me..), to give her a status report on the Privacy Act request of a constituent, and former applicant, Ms. Cahill asked severa questions which was able-to answer and thanked me for the information. I asked and she said there was no need fora written response because she had all the information from my call in order to send a _ response t 2. (Internal Use Only - ME) FOIA I called Mr. Peter Knight, in the office of Representative Newton I. Steers, Jr. (R., Md.), regarding the Congressman's inquiry on behalf of a student requesting information on Americans who were indicted and convicted of espionage, especially during the 1960s. I apologized for our inability to fulfill the request for bibliographies and related materials advising him that I had searched out several, areas of the Agency and no one has such a compilation and it would require time-consuming research to come up with the material requested. I suggested and he agreed that the best place-to check out for this information would be the Congressional Research Service and the Department of Justice. He offered that he had sent a similar letter to eight other Agencies (including the Department of Interior) but didn't really expect to get much from this approach. I asked and he confirmed that no written response is necessary on this request. 3. (Unclassified - LLM) LIAISON Bob Beckel, White House Special Assistant for Congressional Liaison (House), called to suggest that we participate in a legislative group he will chair in anticipation of the submission of a SALT Treaty to the-Senate. Also, arrangements were made with Becke'l.'for the reporting of SALT7related briefings on the Hill. 4. (Internal Use Only - LLM1) LIAISON Talked to Sam Hoskinson, NSC staff, to seek advice on the handling of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on International Operations request concerning foreign intelligence services. It was recommended that at this juncture Robert Lipshutz, Counsel to the President, call Chairman Birch Bayh (D., Ind.), Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, rather than write him on the need for the Committee to assert jurisdiction in a sensitive area.
