Approved For Re1e ,s.e-2QQ(N11/ C ft~P81 M00980R002800 ,, 1., I~3 dal .1^' OLC 78-1064/5 30 October 1978 MEMORANDUM FOR: Assistant for Information, DDA Deputy Legislative Counsel Chief, Coordination and Review Staff Office of Legislative Counsel SUBJECT :-'Resumption of Normal Destruction of CIS Documents 1. (IUO) I called me concerning your call to him suggesting that we send letters to our oversight committees informing them that normal document destruction will begin 1 January 1979. As I understand it, you want letters sent to put the committees on notice and thereby giving them a final opportunity to raise any objections rather than facing the possibility that the committees will raise objections on I January. Presumably, if the objections are raised now we will have enough time to work them out. 2. (IUO) I am definitely against sending such letters at this time. We had extensive and painstaking coordination with the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Assassinations Committee to clear the way for resuming normal destruction as of 1 January. All Congressional interests and concerns have been satisfied and they have been put on notice. If we send letters now we may very well stir up Congressional reactions and further delay normal destruction. As you undoubtedly know, the schedules for destruction have been cleared with all committees of concern as well as the Archivist and only routine documents in no way connected with any Congressional investigations are to be destroyed. 3. (IUO) I discussed your proposal withi vho had a vital and integral role in our Congressional coordination, and he strongly supports the position that we not send any letters at this time. I concur in the need for such letters to complete the record; however, they should not be sent until 31 December and only for purposes of notification . V Ufa a ~.',1;,,
