SUBJECT: Current Intelligence Briefing on Africa for
Representative Edward J. Derwinski (R., Ill.)
and Colleagues
1. " On 23 May, NFAC/CSS, briefed
Representative Edward J. Derwinski (R., Ill.) and six
colleagues on trouble spots in Africa. The members who
attended all or a portion of the briefing were Representatives
John H. Cunningham (R., Wash.), Philip M. Crane (R., Ill.),
Robert E. Bauman (R., Md.), Robert K. Dornan (R., Calif.),
Lawrence P. McDonald (D., Ga.), and Tom J. Corcoran (R
Ill)

25X1 Thomas R. Smeeton, Minority Staff Consultant, House International
Relations Committee, arranged the briefing and attended.
2. (E] covered- the current situation and
25X1 prospects in t iopia and Angola, and also touched on Zaire,
Rhodesia, Zambia. and Chad. She responded to questions from
the members and replied to doctrinaire monologues by Represen-
tatives Dornan and McDonald that our job was not policy but
information. The members obviously appreciated her knowledge
of the area as evidenced by the fact that the briefing which
began at 4:30 p.m. lasted about an hour and a half. Representa-
tive Derwinski was called to the floor for a vote as the meeting
began and did not return.

3. There were no follow-up items from the briefing.
Several o t e members did request atlases and NIS factbooks,
which OLC provided.
