1. Djakarta remains tense as President Sukarno confers
with political and military leaders.

5. The US Embassy in Djakarta has been warned of the 25X1
possibility of further hostile action against the Embassy, re-
portedly being encouraged by Foreign Minister Subandrio in
"retaliation" for anti-Communist demonstrations.

1. There have been no reports of new developments
in Djakarta since the last situation report.
2. The Indonesian army officer in charge of
security in Djakarta today assured the US Embassy of
complete protection and also promised to protect
American residences. He stated that a large demon-
stration against the Embassy which had been slated
for tomorrow has been forestalled. In view of the
generally unstable security situation in Djakarta the
value of this assurance is problematic.
