1. In late 1953, the chief of the Development Department oo VEB Carl Zeiss, Jena, Austrian
born.'Dip1 Izig JBischof~ ., ') .. was relieved of his functions with the enterprise.
He was reproached for inefficiency in general and.~in particular,for his failure
to accept for development the model of a quartz spectrograph built. 'o I. by Professor
Friedrich Leutwein of the Freiberg Mining Academy and member of the Central,
Committee of the SED. The firing of Bischoff was instigated by the SED.
2. Dr. Herbert Kortum, a returnee from Russia in late 1953, was appointed successor
to Bischoff in early 1954.
