Fitzwater Deputy Director for Administration SUBJECT: Certification of the Need for Extension of Classification on Documents Systematically Reviewed and Processed During the Year 1981 REFERENCE: DDA Memorandum dated 24 April 1981; Subject: Certification of the Need for Extension of Classification on Documents Systematically Reviewed and Processed During the Years 1978 and 1979 M ca 1. The Classification Review Division, Office of Information Services, performs the systematic review for the Agency of documents 20 years old or older as required by Executive Order 12065. The referenced memorandum describes the manner in which the systematic review is conducted, the experience level of the officers conducting the review, and the types of information we are protecting. The results of the review are entered into an ADP system called Declassification and Review (DARE), which is also your record of the documents you have certified as requiring continued classification to protect national security interests, a certification that only the head of an agency may issue. You signed the certification for documents entered into the DARE system during the calendar years 1978 and 1979 on 29 April 1981. On 24 June 1981 you signed the DARE system's certification for 1980. 2. We are now requesting your certification for entries to the DARE system during calendar year 1981. During that year 30,140 documents were recorded. Of these, Classification Review Division recommends continued classification of 26,695 to protect the following: Sources and Methods 25,586 Foreign Government Information 332 Foreign Relations 556 Cryptology 155 Other 66 As before, we are attaching a random sampling of these documents for your perusal.
