Please let me extend my best wishes and assurances of the support of the Intelligence Community and of the Central Intelligence Agency on your assumption of the great responsi- bilities of your office. I am delighted that we have had the opportunity to brief you and to serve you as Vice President. May I reiterate my earlier comments that the President is our first and principal customer and that we will arrange to serve you in the field of foreign intelligence in any way you 'tuink most convenient. As is customary on such occasions, Mr. President, I hereby offer my resignation to you, to be accepted at any time at your pleasure. Although he is out of the country on a mission, I have Lieutenant General Vernon Walters' permis- sion to make the same offer on his behalf from the post of 'deputy Director of Central Intelligence. Knowing the demands on your time, both of us will continue to serve unless we hear to the contrary.
