Dear Mr. Colby:
Recently, during an official visit to the Middle East of
several members of the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations of the
Senate Committee on Appropriations, certain information was obtained
regarding the military balance in that area, both historically and at
the present time. At the request of one of the members of the Sub-
committee, of which I am Chairman, I am forwarding the information to
you for an evaluation of its comparability to numbers and projections
available to the Central Intelligence Agency.
The report to Chairman McClellan on the trip will be a
classified document. Hence, the credibility of the data provided
therein will be of crucial importance to the usefulness of the report.
Your help in establishing a high degree of credibility will be greatly
appreciated.
