MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Telephone call from Vice Admiral Fitzhugh Lee
1. Admiral Fitzhugh Lee, Commandant of the National War
College, called me today to say that sometime ago a question arose
as to whether or not it would be advantageous to have someone from
the Agency assigned to the National War College faculty. He said
that he believed this stemmed from a visit by Ambassador Berger
to the Agency, and had probably been discussed with Mr. Sherman
Kent and no and that the pros and cons had been
kicked around for sometime. Admiral Lee stated that it was his
understanding that if such an arrangement were made that the Agency
would provide the slot and salary for the officer assigned there.
2. Admiral Lee said that he was neutral in the matter, that he
could see advantages and disadvantages, and he just wanted to get my
personal views. I told him that this was the first I had heard of the
proposal but that I would look into it immediately and be in touch with
him. I also told him that if we sent someone over we would certainly
take care of his salary and slot and would send a well-qualified officer,
but would want to have someone assigned to the faculty only if this were
desired by the National War College. He asked that I think it_ over and
let him know sometime in January -- the assignment would not be effective
until next July.
