Approved For Release 2961b4111pi-f~PW;T-4i'16A000100010047-3 OCI No. 2937/66 CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY Office of Current Intelligence 8 January 1966 INTELLIGENCE MEMORANDUM The Dominican Republic Situation Report (Report as of 1:30 PM EST) 1. The regular Dominican military may be pre- paring to relinquish control of Radio Santo Domingo, which they seized during the evening of 6 January. According to unconfirmed press reports, erstwhile Armed Forces Secretary Rivera Caminero has said that the military will evacuate the premises of the radio station on, the condition that its facili- ties not be used for political purposes. There is no indication whether Rivera will surrender the sta- tion to its normal management, and hence to the Pro- visional Government, or to representatives of the Inter-American Peace Force (IAPF). 2. In moving out of the radio station, the Dominican military could be seeking a way to ease tension and avoid a showdown with IAPF troops with- out otherwise relenting in their determination to force Provisional President Garcia Godoy to with- draw his decree posting prominent military leaders abroad. The military chiefs give every appearance of being prepared to wait out what they evidently calculate will be a turn-a-bout or resignation by the Provisional President. 3. There have been no other developments of sig- nificance since this morning's situation report. The OAS Council was to convene at noon today in lashington.
